Levoxin

What is Levoxin? Levofloxacin is the l-isomer of the racemate, ofloxacin, a quinolone antimicrobial agent. The antibacterial activity of ofloxacin resides primarily in the l-isomer. The mechanism of action of levofloxacin involves inhibition of bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase enzymes, These both which are type Il topoisomerases are required for DNA replication, transcription, repair and recombination in bacteria. Baclericide concentrations of Levofloxacin are equal to or slightly greater than bacteriostatic concentrations. Since levofloxacin differ in chemical structure and mode of action, it is mostly active against bacteria resistant to B-lactam antibiotics. Resistance to levofoxacin due lo spontaneous mufation in vitro is a rare occurrence, with 10-9 to frequency. Levofloxacin has a wide range of activity spectrum and is active against most of gram-negative and gram-positive microorganisms. Levofloxacin has been shown to be active against the following microorganisms both in vitro and in clinical infections.
